Hi everyone! My name is Julie and I am passionate about languages. On this channel I am doing profiles of different languages of our planet in order to inspire you to look deeper into them and maybe even to start learning some of them! I think that in the world where everyone tends to speak only one global language it is very important not to forget all the other languages as by learning them you understand the history and the mindset of people who speak them. If you think the same then it's a great reason to subscribe to this channel!

What is common between Sun Yat-sen, a revolutionary, Ieoh Ming Pei, an architect, and Jackie Chan, the Jackie Chan? They speak the same language. Which is… - Chinese, correct. But which Chinese? Because there are many varieties of Chinese, or many Chinese languages. The variety these three famous people share as a native language - Cantonese - has a strong presence in modern Chinese culture and is spoken not only in China but all over the world. Cantonese had a rich history from Cantonese opera to Hong Kong cinema and Cantopop and has a strong presence not only in South East China, but also all over the world.

Simba, Rafiki, Pumba and of course Hakuna Matata - all these famous names and phrases come from probably the most well-known and the most widespread African language. If I told you, name one African language, you’d probably name this one. Swahili is a lingua franca in East Africa and an official language in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda. Around 100 million people speak Swahili (and many mo...

About the Gothic language
Переглядів 181 тис.11 місяців тому
What do we think about when we hear the word "Gothic"? Most definitely we immediately think about a subculture or an architecture style. But the word has much deeper roots and another very different meaning. The Goths were a Germanic tribe who once dominated half of Europe. They had their language and their own writing system, both are now long forgotten. But who knows, maybe if history played ...

About the Sumerian language

Sumerian is probably the most mysterious language out there. It's the language of the people who created the first civilization and the first writing system. Or is it? I'm not solving the mystery of Sumerian here, but I hope I can present to you a...

Koine Greek has been used in Orthodox liturgy and Latin in Western Catholic liturgy since the time when they were 'living' languages, and Koine Greek is very 'intercomprehensible' with Classical Greek. So it would be fair to say that both Greek and Latin are living languages. For example, Jesuits have maintained Latin as a living language. Hebrew, although extinct as a spoken language by late antiquity, continued to be used in Spain for various purposes until its 19th century revival. So these three, Greek Latin and Hebrew, are living languages,

Excellent video. Thank you!
@JuLingo thank you for your video. I want to add that the influence of the Portuguese also have an impact with words like meza (Table), peremende (Candy/Sweets) and mvinyo (Wine/Alcohol) being loan words of Portuguese origin. This was during the period where the Portuguese were looking to a sea route eastward to India to cut off the Venetian Spice traders.

Trust me, Cantonese is a little bit difficult to pronounce than Mandarin. I'm a native speaker of Hokkien (Southern Min), it will be more difficult for us to understand each others.

There was the film "Warlock" (1989). The main character used the magic of the rituals of the cursed forgotten religions of Asia. Judging by the spells he cast, it’s all about the theme of this video.

you are beautiful
The word “Canton” spoken in French, so phonetically similar to Gong Dong spoken in Cantonese. Try to put Canton in google translate and pronounce it the French way, and then ask a Cantonese person to pronounce Gong Dong (Guangdong in Mandarin) for you. They sound similar. I am fluent in Cantonese born in Guangzhou, fluent in Mandarin, English, and have studied French, Latin and Japanese before. Cheers from Los Angeles.
By far the easiest language to learn especially by English speakers
Excellent appreciation
Incredible research into a very convoluted subject. You did an amazing job of streamlining your presentation. Thanks, Ronn
Bravo, Julie!!!
Imagine as a white person making a video of the Swahili language and putting a European with African attire. This is the type of shit that makes people think Jesus is a European or modern day middle eastern. Sorry I get you love to study African history but there is no one that can teach us about OURSELVES than a motherlander.

It boggles my mind how some Westerners confuse Cantonese and Mandarin. They are so different!
It's made worse when Mandarin speakers (with encouragement from the Chinese government) promote the concept that all Chinese languages are just dialectal variants.
Who, that was a lot of information in 14 minutes.
